Followed along with the Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu 7th Ed. Quick-Start and it seemed that you deviated a bit, so you must have been using a different book or maybe the core rulebook?

To Metagame or Not Metagame, that is the question… I figure that you can build a character anyway you want, just as long as everyone gets to build the same way and you play it the way that you built it. E.g. Do not give your character a low APP and then do all the talking; a low INT and provide all of the answers.

From your talk though, it is not sounding like there is a lot of difference to the new edition; we shall see in future podcasts.

Some ideas that I like are…

Having a prerequisite for certain occupations.

The adventure at the back of the quick-start rules looks structured like D&D adventures, maybe I will be able to figure out how to run them now.

Number of points for stats.

Some ideas that I am not liking are…

Having the weapon stats placed in with the skills.

Luck points? I guess you can skew them from the previous calculation of POW x 5.

Dice rolling for stats.

Cheers

Guess I will have to give a more full review once it comes out since it is too new; this is all based on the quick-start rules.

Just get the Open Game License (OGL) and tweak it for Call of Cthulhu; hey, everyone else is doing it.

The two playtests sounded pretty good, despite trashing a playtest adventure; this always seems to be the norm. But hey, at least you are playing Call of Cthulhu.

Watching a video on YouTube and they brought my attention to arrays. Though this is somewhat better than the dice, you are still stuck with these numbers; down with the metagamers? Still waiting for them to dig up a point-buy system.

The chase rules could be categorized into a skill challenge. Just in case there are several other rules that categorize like this. E.g. climbing, swimming, etc... Guess they might need something to fill page lengths.

DC's I guess are being categorized by the half and fifth values now. I find this a brought-down since it sounds like the CON by two, three, four, or five rule is going away with; now it will be only three chances instead of five.

Are adventures going to be labeled with APL's as in D&D? This adventure is going to be an APL4. Sounds like Call of Cthulhu characters would be getting levels. Like the idea of leveling by tick marks on your skills and then you get to roll to see if you increased in knowledge. That is something that D&D is lacking. Though you do gain experience, you do not gain it after each sitting; the higher your level the farther in-between that you gain that knowledge.

What about the disease progression? Especially in a world of not true D&D magic to counteract the disease. There are still rats, airborne, ghouls, etc…

Anywho…

So far, at the foundation level, it is looking like Call of Cthulhu 7th edition is giving into the masses and starting to look like every other game out there, but I understand that there is going to be certain tweaks that make it different/better/worse/etc…. (E.g. 13th Age I feel is just another D&D game, but with just different tweaks.)

In the end, we will try to believe that it will not be. (SAN roll)
